Re: Zero's name
That's a good question I don't really know....
Maybe its because of Western influences? In some translations I've seen of the raws, the translators sometimes actually translate his name as the word for the number itself, and since Zero is the English equivalent to Rei, maybe its just easier during the translation process....? Where have you heard his name aloud, like on a drama CD??
I can't really say because of course I've only read the kanji for his name and have never had to speak it aloud...
I'm not a native Japanese speaker, so I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful....

Re: Zero's name
In the anime and all translations, his name is always Zero, I just got confused becasue in the raw, its clearly Rei. Just weird. Either way, since I don't speak japanese, the name Zero sounds way cooler then Rei to me anyway LOL

Re: Zero's name
btw I don't know japanese but I looked up zero's name
from wiktionary
ZERO
katakana ゼロ: zero, naught, nothing
Kanji 零 (common “Jōyō” kanji)
Readings
On: れい (rei)
Kun: おちる (ochiru), ふる (furu), こぼれる (koboreru)
Zero as a japanese number
零 (れい) /ゼロ
hmm i don't understand. LOL. but it looks like there are two ways to write Zero either as a noun or an adjective. Zero itself in japanese means zero (number), or nothing. but it doesn't seem to be originally japanese in origin... i think "Zero" is romanji? ehh
I think Rei is the way to read "zero" because its not originally japanese.. hmm im not really sure

Re: Zero's name
LOL what a powerful/confusing name indeed. Thank you all for the responses, this issue has been bugging me a lot. Now I wonder how japanese readers pronounce his name when they read it.

Re: Zero's name
For the explanation for zero and rei.
Rei is the number zero and is written in Kanji. So the kanji is a word for zero.
But zero's name in katakana is diffrent. The katakana symbols represent sounds. so here a symbol for 'ze' and one for 'ro'. Katakana is used for not-native words
Hino was aware of the english meaning and but she didn't want people to say it as teh number (rei) . She really wanted people to say zero, therefor the katakana writing, not the kanji.
I hope Im right about this because I thought his name was written in kanji. But like this it makes more sense. I've never really paid attention to the raws.
Hope that makes it clear.
to zerofan: Hino wanted zero to have a powerful name. Zero sounds strong and no one forgets it so that fits the description. Plus zero means the number 0 and the ichi from ichiru means 1. So ichiru was born later and has a number that comes later. So there's also that referennce in his name.

Re: Zero's name
Zero is rei in japanese, though Hino-san is smart and creative to use Zero as his name instead of Rei, maybe because of western influence, and his twin brother, Ichiru, I notice that a part of his name has a number, "Ichi" means one
Zero is the oldest twin and Ichiru is the younger twin---> Zero and One
and I think I'm
