The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Read it recently, and for someone who usually don't read books I couldn't stop reading. One of the most emotional and strongest works out there.

Hmm, after reading the book I thought the movie was bad... a big part of the book is how much Amir is troubled by his guilt throughout his life, and in the movie you don't get this (the guy looks completely indifferent to what happened). Neither do you sense the great friendship he and Hassan had. Alot is skipped out on in general, but for visuals the movie is enjoyable to look at. But I'd still recommend the book. The movie was more like a summary of it.

I thought it was good all the same, if the movie was the embodiment of the book I think it had captured at least part of the essence which was the friendship between them, I agree though even I havent read the book I think that guy who was writing that book lacked expression lol
it was touching, long and adventurous, reminded me of Slumdog Millionaire but this was deeper

Lol ok xD If you read the book you will probably think otherwise, my overall reaction to it while still having the book fresh in memory was kinda "Wtf?? " If I can mention two examples,
- Spoiler:
- SPOILER
you know when Amir gets beat up by his childhood enemy when fetching Hassan's son? Throughout this fight in the book Amir has flashbacks of his life and ends up laughing in gratitude over finally recieving the punishment he's felt he's deserved all his life for how he betrayed Hassan. This was one of the climaxes in the book and had me choking on tears *__* In the movie, this happened so fast you're kinda left with "What just happened?". Just my opinion though...
He also gets beat up so bad he ends up at the hospital. When dealing with Sohrab, he has trouble bonding with him and gaining custody over him so he can take him back to America. Sohrab also tries to committ suicide, which is the reason he stops talking afterwards, while in the movie this is never explained. Didn't you wonder why he was talking in one scene and in the next was dead silent? Here's the reason why =/
Not to mention how you get pretty much Amir and Hassan's entire lifestory with countless of their moments together, while in the movie we have two or three (...?) before they're separated
Of course, the book is usually better no matter what adaption we're talking, but I still feel they could have done a better job. Not saying you shouldn't like the movie though, go ahead xD I just don't do it myself.
Aya-chan:
The story senters around a rich boy, Amir, and his family's servant, Hassan, who are best friends. Amir struggles with issues regarding him and his father however, causing him to be jealous of Hassan and often treating him badly, in difference to Hassan who always treats him like a true friend, supporting and protecting him. One day, Amir witnesses Hassan getting raped and does nothing to help him, a decision that haunts him for years to come. He continues to push Hassan away and the Soviet invasion separates them. Amir manages to escape with his father to America and gets settled there. 15 to 20 years later he recieves a phone call from one of his old friends from Afghanistan who tells him there's a chance for redemption. He returns to learn that Hassan has a son who needs his help.

Thanks! I guess this is a psychologycal (probably i misspelled the word) book.
Seems to be a sad book. I don't like sad things!
But I will try to find it and read it.

its not a sad book .. more like "heart-wrenching" .. nor is it psychological, its more on friendship and the struggle of two friends... their bond is quite inspirational
so anyway

actually I think the movie covered Amir's guilt enough.. From the point where he deliberately ignored and even framed Hassan after he was beaten up for saving his ass up till the point he left for america, it was quite "WTF are you doing you wuss" for me, until he owed up to saving Sohrab as an atonement.. and the "journey" he went through to get him as well as his determination, IMO was worth everything... I thought Sohrab's catatonic state had to do much with him being raised by terrorists (and beaten up while he was there) while stripped off his identity, he basically was being raised to kill people, I wasnt expecting him to adapt immediately after he was adopted by "him" it would definitely take a while. he obviously looked the type to need lots of therapy and counseling after what he went through. previously it was shown that the children who were kidnapped had trauma so deep they had to be extensively rehabilitated.
the beauty of the movie is it doesnt have to explain every little detail to get the point across, I knew there was something wrong inside Sohrab from his silence IMO, so I wasnt expecting there to be rainbows and butterflies... quite sad what he went through. i guess both sides had their share of grief after losing each other.
in the movie Amir was the rich pampered brat at first and Hassan was the very definition of a true, loyal friend.. which Amir later lived up to in a different way
it was a memorable movie, recommended to me by a friend who haven't read the book but have seen the movie, so its not that bad. its very good must say.. but maybe i'll read the book if i come across it
anyway you cant expect movies to be 4hours long so it covers everything, it doesn't feature Noah's arc or the old testament LOL its like Manga > anime adaptations sometimes it covers everything sometimes it doesnt.

Still, the fact that he tried to kill himself was a major jawdrop moment in the book, this being left out was weird xO But I get that they tried to keep the essential parts of the book all the time, what happened was just that it all became really rushed (when you know the book and how the pacing and action really went). The personalities of the characters went missing too, imo. Movies are always shorter than the book, of course, yet alot of adaptions I've seen yet managed to keep the pacing well and captured the tension and characters as well as the book did. But enough complaining from me, it's just what I felt when having read the book, but again, I don't mind that you like it. If you someday read the book however, do tell what you think xD
in the movie, Hassan saves Amir's ass from the bullies after he gets the kite and he gets beaten up instead and gets "sexually abused" or rape as you said . Amir just watches while this happens and couldn't confront or thank him for what happened. Amir eventually tries to get rid of that "embarrassing situation" by framing Hassan so he will have to leave, eventually Hassan leaves their service voluntarily until they left for america. That's what happened in the movie
Isn't that spoiling it a little? I wrote it short for the reason of not doing so xD
Aya: ... you see the difference between people's reactions from the book and movie.... The book can get really sad and physocological like you put it, but at the same time it's really touching and heartwarming when it gets to the good bits. It describes human nature well and most will feel related to a character or situation. But like sweet put it, it's mostly about friendship and the importance of it, next to the act of redemption. You won't regret reading it, I promise

- yes I did see Amir's guilt in the movie, hell, I can imagine he should be feeling guilty at all if he's even humane, though it does severely lack in that movie, I thought there should be more, but I think his struggle to get Sohrab pretty much showed his guilt. And in the movie he readily accepted his wife's inability to give him "that" pretty much says how he views human suffering and handicaps in the overall. he was a changed man
Yes Sohrab was raised to kill, I think so too or why would they teach him apathy and whatnot, its usually that way for terrorists and how they get recruits. I also recall a scene where Sohrab was forced to partake in a massacre of a place. The gradual deterioration of his morals and beliefs were felt, IMO. why do you think they kidnap children? For trick and treat occasions, no ofc not. I think the abuse part is also included there, that's why its very traumatic for this people, the movie has covered that part about their rehabilitation quite well.
I think it was a really good movie, if they extended it would probably be better, I just watch movies this days being too lazy to read books but if i come across it i'll probably drop by here again
hm as for spoiling I edited it out a little but its the reason why its inside the spoiler in the first place, LOL because its a spoiler. i commented on that part since you said hassan was raped, well it was more like "gang rape" between same genders, imagine girls raping a boy about his age lol anyway im merely stating logic here its odd to see girls raping a boy. that was probably the worst scene of all...and i wouldnt even get to the part where hassan was extremely humiliated, his dignity was literally pissed over.

From what I remember they brought in the kids as entertainment and servants. Sohrab was used as a dancing boy (and apparently "sex toy"). Nowhere is it said they raised them to become terrorists. When Sohrab explained later, he said how they used him to do "dirty" things with him, so using him as entertainment only is what I got from it.

Personally I'm a big fan of Young Adult (YA) novels, particularly fantasy.
Some of my favourite books at the moment (they change fairly regularly ):
Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater (Wolves of Mercy Falls #1)
City of bones by Cassandra Clare (Mortal Instruments #1)
(Note: A LOT of people don't like the ending of City of Bones, but I'd recommend you persist with the rest of the series because I think it gets better )
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Re: Suggestions...books
Also, (just thought I'd mention):
In 'Vampire Academy', it's a story about a school where vampires attend at night, and the main character is a girl who is a guardian. She has a vampire best friend (who she lives with at the school) whose parents and brother were killed and only her best friend survived.
Just thought I'd give that little summary since it sounds similar to another story we all know Haha but that's about where the similarities to VK end.
I think it's a good story and recommend it. It's actually a lot different to VK. There are 7 books in the series (Vampire Academy, Frostbite, Shadow Kiss, Blood Promise, Spirit Bound and Last Sacrifice, plus a spin off series 'Bloodlines')

I'd recammon Eragon too. I really liked the first book, the others kinda became a drag to read (they're very long .. never finished the third >___<)

These are two of my favorite books. i love city of bones, and vampire academy because rose is such a strong heroine, but the only other books that i liked as much as these, were Intertwined by Gena showalter and the summoning by kelley armstrong which are both series books

I think it's a good story and recommend it. It's actually a lot different to VK. There are 7 books in the series (Vampire Academy, Frostbite, Shadow Kiss, Blood Promise, Spirit Bound and Last Sacrifice, plus a spin off series 'Bloodlines')
Which out of the books to do you think is the best, for me i say 1. Shadow Kiss, 2. Last Sacrifice 3. Spirit Bound $. Frostbite 5. Vampire Academy &. Blood Promise. Though Vampire academy can make me cry at certain parts others can make you laugh and be all happy and the action scenes are awesome and of course the explosions

Re: Suggestions...books
LovelyLadyJ wrote:Kara wrote:Personally I'm a big fan of Young Adult (YA) novels, particularly fantasy.
These are two of my favorite books. i love city of bones, and vampire academy because rose is such a strong heroine, but the only other books that i liked as much as these, were Intertwined by Gena showalter and the summoning by kelley armstrong which are both series books
I do like Vampire academy too. It´s a fantastic story Okay here´s more:
Halo by Alexandra Adornetto
The night hourse by P.C Cast and Kristin Cast
The Call of the deaths by Kelley Armstrong
The Vampire diaries by L.J Smith
Okay i love these books
