Ruka’s role in the story

Ruka is in love with the Night-Class President Kaname Kuran but he never meets her feelings. Back in Cross Academy she offers to him her blood in order to protect Yuuki Cross from Kaname’s craving. Even though she does not know much she can sense the pureblod’s desire for Yuuki Cross and the fact mostly saddens her. She changes her mind and she decides to remain one of Kaname’s closest supporters when she discovers what Kaname’s and Yuuki’s real relationship is. Then she becomes a friend to Yuuki offering her help and her services and seems more positive towards Kain’s attentions.

In Ruka, the ru means "lapis lazuli" while the ka means "good-looking" or beautiful. The sou in Ruka's surname, Souen, means "early" but this kanji also has an obscure meaning of strong fragnance". The en means "garden".
